Things I Will Do Before I Turn 30

A few months ago I decided that I needed to make a bucket list of things I will do before I turn 30. I often hear people discuss things they “want” to do before they turn a certain age, which is why I wanted to make a list that leaves no room for failure. The list is in no particular order and I plan to continue to add things to it as time moves forward.

Legalize marijuana in Oregon

Measure 80 got almost 47% support in 2012, which would have allowed for unlimited personal possession and unlimited personal growing of marijuana for adults 21 and over. Many national advocates are advising that Oregon wait for 2016 to make another run at legalization, which makes sense because it will be a presidential election which historically has a higher turnout rate then off years. However, there is one major fact that seems to be going fairly unnoticed.

Oregon received less than 1% of the funding that Colorado and Washington received for their legalization initiatives, and still managed to get nearly 47% of the vote. I started Oregonians for Law Reform with a very close friend of mine, Kaliko Castille, six weeks before the election was over and managed to independently raise a little over $10,000 for Measure 80 that was mainly spent on advertising and general awareness.

Had Oregon received a mere $100,000 more, we could have easily passed Measure 80. Currently efforts are underway in the upcoming 2013 legislative session to establish a state regulated medical marijuana supply system that will allow Oregon legislators to see what real regulation looks like. Much of Colorado’s legalization initiative was modeled off of their existing medical marijuana industry. If we can establish our own regulated supply system, the door to legalization will be left wide open.

With the momentum the marijuana reform community has built up in the last few years, hopefully legalizing marijuana will far before I turn 30. In fact, if Oregon hasn’t legalized marijuana by 2020, I give you permission to blame me.
